Here’s a few pictures from an end of year team visit to our completed Awarua Street project. It was looking lovely in the summer sun, we’re all very proud at how it has turned out.

This is where it all began.

We are very pleased to announce that last night at the NZIA Wellington Architecture Awards ceremony, Egmont Street Eatery, was recognised under the Hospitality and Retail category.

An excerpt from the Jury citation is:

“A limited but fashionable colour palette, and the simple shapes employed, is fresh and welcoming. This is a busy, action packed space with a charming breakout of seating onto the edge of the lane.”

We would also like to further acknowledge the effort of Holmes Construction Group Ltd, who were the main fit-out contractors, as well as Simon Pepping our client, whose patience and excellent judgement was critical for the success of this small urban intervention.

On a final note, we highly recommend, that you visit this establishment and experience the excellent service and food on offer.

This is a short time lapse video of the installation of CLT panels on a residential project in Wellington. The installation onsite to place the panels took approximately an overall of 4 hours. You can also view final images of this project within our portfolio here.

We are really proud of our recently completed fit out for Egmont Street Eatery.

Simon Pepping from the Catering Studio approached us at the end of 2013, as he was looking to colonise part of a basement carpark to create a new catering kitchen for his well established existing business, but also create a new space where he could expand his activities and offer services complimentary to the catering kitchen.

Egmont Street Eatery was created to compliment the food offering that Simon had in mind – seasonal, fresh, and simple. Since it has opened its doors, reviews have started appearing in different places, and we decided that this would be a good place to collect them.

Great to have another one of our new house projects on-site now.  This 95m2 2-bedroom house plus internal access single garage is on the back of good old 1/4 acre section in Upper Hutt. The premise of the project is to enable multi-generational living on the site, with the grandparents building and living in this new house, but also with a fair degree of autonomy and privacy to enjoy there own space.

In planning this house we have been able to make the most of the site’s excellent northern aspect and southern approach – it’s stretched across the width of the site as much as possible with a main east-west axis giving all the rooms a nice northern aspect. A small verandah will provide some shade and shelter from the hot Hutt Valley summers, and from the occasional rain in the region, while a good 100m2 garden area will enable it to be enjoyed.  We’ve also followed best practice universal design standards to ensure the house will serve its owners well into their retirement.  This means overall things –  like level access, no steps, wide corridors, and a wet area shower – as well as details like powerpoints higher than usual and away from room corners.

So it is underway with the concrete piles below the slab in-place – a requirement identified in our initial geotechnical report – and getting the base course down in preparation for insulation and the slab pour. Nice work so far from Tussock Construction!

If you are a regular to our website, you will have noticed it has had a considerable upgrade.

For the technically inclined, we have moved from a SquareSpace subscription based service, to a WordPress template. We did this for two reasons. First, we were looking for more control over our content, and our previous website was getting harder to manage, and I suspect that this was more to do with our skill than the capabilities of the service we were using. The WordPress platform has also had a learning curve attached to it, but we do feel more in control of it, within the limitations of the theme we have chosen. Also the other factor that we were struggling with was the appearance of our website across all devices, especially smartphones. The WordPress website makes the changes required automatically, and in website jargon, is a ‘responsive’ site. So we are hoping this will be valuable change.

We do hope this new website better communicates who we are, and like any new thing, we are ironing out the bugs and faults, so if you do notice any errors or if something doesn’t gel, please bring it to our attention, as all things can be improved with critique and refinement.
